Hebrews 6:1-2 “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands…”

5 Primary Applications

✦ Release Divine Blessing. The blessing of the father is often demonstrated through laying his hands upon the one to be blessed.

✚ Gen 48:14-15 “And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn. And he blessed Joseph, and said…”

✚ Mark 10:16 “And he [Jesus] took them [little children] up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.”

✦ Heal the Sick. A primary function in Christ’s ministry, as well as all believers.

✚ Matt 16:17-18 “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my [Jesus] name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

✚ Mark 8:23-25 “And he [Jesus] took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.”

✚ Luke 4:40 “Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him [Jesus]; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.”

✚ Acts 28:8 “And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.”

✚ Acts 9:17-18 “And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.”

✦ Receive the Holy Ghost.

✚ Acts 8:17 “Then laid they [Peter & John] their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.”

✚ Acts 19:6 “And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”

✦ Impart Spiritual Gifts.

✚ 1 Tim 4:14 “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.” (NKJV)

✚ NASB says, “Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.”

✦ Commission/Ordain. (Set apart for the work of God)

✚ Num 27:18-19 “And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him; and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.”

✚ Acts 6:3-6 “ Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. …whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.”

✚ Acts 13:2-3 “As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.”

Proper Order

Paul exhorts us to not be hasty in laying hands on others, especially for the work of the ministry. In the context of the eldership of the church, he says…

“Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.” 1 Tim 5:22

✦  It should not be done without the person first being proven to be mature in the faith. (1 Tim 3; Titus 1:5-9)

It should be done without partiality or respect of persons. (1 Tim 5:21)

✚ “For there is no respect of persons with God.” (Rom 2:11)

✚ “But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.” (James 2:9)

It should be done by the Spirit, through prayerful consideration.

✚ “And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.” (Acts 14:23)

Authority of Heaven

Though the laying on of hands releases blessing, power and authority, it has nothing to do with the person’s hands themselves but everything to do with the will of God to work though one to impact another.

All authority first belongs to Christ (Matt 28:18) and we are partakers through Christ in us (Luke 9:1; Gal 2:20). Thus, we can fulfill His purposes in the earth. It is His Spirit that works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure (Php 2:13).
